Arrowwood Refuge

Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge contains nearly 16,000 acres of lakes, marshes, prairie grasslands, wooded coulees, cultivated fields, and shelterbelt plantings. The refuge, located 15 miles southeast of Carrington, is administered by the Department of Interior U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Refuge is primarily intended to attract and hold waterfowl during the spring and fall migrations. It is one of a chain of refuges along the Central Flyway, extending from Canada to Mexico. Another function of the Refuge is to provide a wildlife-orientated recreation area for public use.

Lake Juanita

Many area residents have built cottages on Lake Juanita about 25 miles east of Carrington. The lake is a popular location for boating, water skiing, and picnicking. The area provides good summer and winter fishing and hunting.

Hawk's Nest

Only a few miles southwest of Carrington is a butte three hundred feet higher than the surrounding plains known as "The Hawk's Nest." The area is owned by the Carrington Kiwanis Club, which has provided access roads and maintains the grounds. The undeveloped, unfenced 100-acre area has one of the few remaining native stands of buffalo grass and pine oaks. Visitors to the "Hawk's Nest" can enjoy nature study, hiking, birding and overnight camping during warm weather, as well as skiing and tobogganing in the winter.
